Divine Mercy School (DMS) is one of the selected schools in Abuja where the “Power Forward” project is active. Power Forward is funded by the National Basketball Association (NBA), Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), Africare and ExxonMobil.
It’s a youth engagement initiative using basketball to develop health, leadership and life skills in Nigeria. This youth empowerment and development initiative teaches leadership skills and builds health awareness through a combination of classroom and athletic activities.
The initiative began at DMS in 2014 and we emerged as the champions in their yearly Basketball event of the 2015 edition. We have also through this initiative, implemented Malaria awareness programmes at Guzape and Kpebi (Kobi) Districts within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) where our students who are enrolled in the Project (Direct Beneficiaries) distributed various items to residents of these communities especially to their pregnant women and children. The project also focuses on observing health related campaigns such as World Environment Day, Global Hand washing Day, World Aids Day, World Menstrual Hygiene Day (Girls only) etc.
The “Power Forward” project has greatly improved the wellbeing of our Pupils and students who are both direct and indirect beneficiaries of this initiative.
